Cancer Screening Resources
Funded by Cancer Council Victoria
In 2018 PRACE completed a project with the support from the Victorian Cancer Council.
The goal of the project was to create teaching and learning resources for EAL students to gain an improved understanding of cancer prevention strategies and cancer screening processes.
We are pleased to announce that these resources are now available to all adult educational providers.

My neighbourhood: literacy in context

‘My Neighbourhood’ is a print based resource (130 pages) packed with activities designed to support students to develop literacy skills in context. Each activity contains information for the teacher alongside activity sheets and/or handouts for the students. In addition there are a number of skill sheets to support students in completing the activities. The activities encourage the use of technology and have been designed to support teachers who aren’t ‘tech savvy’ but are interested in starting to explore the digital world. Those teachers and students who are comfortable with using a range of ‘e-things’ will be able to extend the activities. Aligned to the CGEA and VCAL.

Our Environment – Teaching Materials for Adult ESL Students

Created and Developed: ‘Our Environment’ was created by ESL teachers and students at Lalor Living and Learning Centre (LLLC) with funding provided by Sustainability Victoria and support from City of Whittlesea. Written by: Sarah Poole, Michelle Morgan and Jessica Jones.
Description: Six Teaching Units, with corresponding Teacher’s Notes, Image Support Files, Flash Cards and the Waste Game, covering the topics of: Understanding Climate Change, Energy Efficiency at Home, Managing Household Waste, Being Wise with Water, Smarter Shopping and Sustainable Transport. Presented in loose leaf format – designed to be downloaded and printed by you.
Target group: Adult ESL Students studying CSWE, but can be adapted to suit other curriculum. Also literacy students. Price: FREE to download soon. Sing with me! Book 1 includes fifteen songs that introduce vocabulary and many of the language structures useful for beginner and post beginner language learners. Each unit begins with a song on a particular settlement theme and focuses on topics such as the weather, health, birthdays and adjusting to a new environment. The song is followed by exercises on vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing and conversation which extend and reinforce the lyrics. Page Turners
In 1999, when 3 of the literacy teachers at Preston Reservoir Adult Community Education couldn’t find much interesting material for beginning readers, they decided to write their own. Thus PageTurners began. Since then PRACE PageTurners have grown to 6 series with the new Series 6 now available. The books are used in all states in Australia and in many countries overseas. PageTurners are intended for both literacy and ESL students and can be used in the classroom and as extra reading.

Target group: The books are suitable for adults and young people at the beginning stages of reading. Humorous pictures aid understanding and there are useful teaching/learning exercises in each book. Level 1 books have approx 100 words while Level 4 have between 400 and 600 words. The authors of PageTurners are Anne Dunn, Chris Malakar and Moira Hanrahan. They are experienced teachers, having worked in a variety of educational settings. PageTurners are published by Preston Reservoir Adult Community Education (PRACE)
