Committee News

1. Bendigo Forum

Marie Bonne and Sandra Wolfe organised the VALBEC Regional Forum 'Understanding and Applying the Australian Core Skills Framework, ACSF' with Philippa McLean held on Tuesday 25 October, Bendigo TAFE City Campus. The 18 people who attended were very appreciative of the knowledge and enthusiasm Philippa brought to the workshop.

2. Numeracy Network

John Radalj is planning for a teleconference for the Numeracy Network and has been busy with ACAL discussions around a response to the National Foundations Skills Strategy.

3. IBSA consultations

Committee working group will put together a response to the IBSA consultations regarding development of a Foundation Skills Training Package.

'Restor(y)ing lives – autobiographical reflection and perspective transformation in adults returning to study'

Jennifer Miles recently completed a Master of Education by Research thesis that examined the process and self-articulated outcomes of five participants who were returning to study at a Victorian TAFE institute.

6. Taking Good Numeracy Practice to Wodonga

Numeracy teaching and learning practices for LLNP and other programs

Monday 21 November, 9.30 - 12.30 (Register 9.00 am)

Wodonga Institute of TAFE, TAFEspace 158 Lawrence Street

This practical workshop will be conducted by experienced numeracy practitioners Maria Santburn and Heather Glover. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to engage with and apply strategies and practices, tried and effective. Maria and Heather have worked in a range of programs over many years and will share their knowledge and teaching tips. Numeracy and Language and Literacy practitioners in ACE, RTOs and TAFE are encouraged to attend.

Cost: Free but registration is essential. Numbers limited to 25 so register early. Preference given to VALBEC members.

7. Victoria University LLN Forum: Making Numeracy Count

‘Reach Every Student’ November 14, 2011

City Flinders Campus, 300 Flinders Street

The keynote presentations will inform a broader discussion led by David Tout of ACER, along with numeracy educators and experts from VU as well as those of other educational bodies. We hope that this forum will commence a robust discussion on Numeracy in the tertiary sector.

10. Foundation Skills Training Package Consultations

IBSA is scoping the development of a Foundation Skills Training Package to provide pathways into vocational qualifications and support for the foundation skills development needs of a range of learners. IBSA is conducting a series of public consultation workshops to gather input from stakeholders across Australia commencing in October.

11. Seeking Expressions of Interest for membership to the ACFE Board and a Regional Council

The Minister for Higher Education and Skills welcomes expressions of interest for membership on the ACFE Board and on all eight of the ACFE Regional Councils. People with a vision for Learn Local education and training and a willingness to contribute to discussions and processes which will enhance the provision of adult education in the community are invited to apply. People with experience in other stakeholder groups with an interest in Learn Local education and training, including industry and business, local government, community services organisations and youth agencies, are also encouraged to express interest.

Expressions of interest are encouraged from all members of the community including women, Indigenous people, young people, people with special needs and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
