The new 2011 - 2012 VALBEC committee met for the first time on 15 June. Co-president John Radalj welcomed new members Linno Rhodes and Paul Rawlinson who work in the Learn Local sector at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre and Glenroy Neighbourhood Learning Centre, respectively. The committee aims to represent the diverse range of settings and aspects of the LLN field, both metropolitan and regional. We welcome input from members to issues and concerns that VALBEC can assist with or provide advice.

There will be a Twilight Forum late in Term 3 to be held in Bendigo - venue and topic to be announced in the next eVALBEC. It is proposed the start time will be 5pm with food during the forum and finishing at 7 to allow for travel time. Those who are interested can contact the organisers Sandra Wolfe and Marie Bonne through info@valbec.org.au with topic requests and suitable days and dates. One request is a repeat of the Working with Australian Core Skills Framework workshop.
Feedback was very positive with some good suggestions. Thanks to all those who took the time to write their comments on the day.

ACSF Forum
As an outcome of the Sharing Good Practice day there is now an ACSF Forum which summarised some of the questions/issues that arose from the CGEA moderation sessions. Check out our Panel Response and post your own questions and comments. This is a great opportunity to shape the direction of future workshops.

Numeracy Teacher's Network
Similarly, there will be details in the next eVALBEC of the formation of a Numeracy Teacher's Network facilitated by John Radalj.
We plan to take some of the workshops to regional centres in the Spring. If you are interested in hosting a workshop in your town or regional city contact info@valbec.org.au
We are hoping to offer the ACSF and a Numeracy workshop.

In our feature Teaching adult numeracy: navigating a dynamic and messy terrain, Keiko Yasukawa from the University of Technology Sydney maintains that while the creation of a more equitable VET system may go some way (for some stakeholders) towards achieving the government's social inclusion and equity targets, research shows that only a change in pedagogy and numeracy teaching practices will lead to real equity.
