Annual General Meeting

The AGM will involve presentation of reports on the 2019 VALBEC year and the election of the new Executive committee for 2020 – 2021.

VALBEC Committee nominations

The VALBEC committee is a dynamic and collaborative group who meet once a month to discuss, plan and take action on behalf of members and the ALBE field. Nominations to be forwarded to the returning officer before the meeting.

Presentation: Adult literacy matters in a Corrections environment

Dr Ron Wilson will talk about LLN in Corrections and the work being done in this area, specifically:-

1. Brief overview of the history of education in Corrections in Australia / Victoria
2. Assumptions underpinning the rationale for education / LLN in corrections
a. Relationship between LLN and theories of crime and criminality
b. Challenges and reforms
3. What is happening now in Victoria?
4. What is important for policy and practice now?

Ron has been involved in Education and Vocational Training for over 35 years with broad experience in a range of positions of management responsibility. Ron worked as a Teacher, Headmaster of a Primary School, Principal of a Special School and General Manager of a major Victorian TAFE Institute where he managed major Government contracts, led strategic planning and facilitated student learning support programs. Since 2007, Ron has continued his commitment to the VET sector through his consultancy practice. He is currently deputy chair of the Adult community and Further Education Board and president of the Australasian Corrections education Association.
In 1996, Ron was recognised in the Australia Day Honours with the Public Service medal for outstanding public service for introducing Vocational Education and Training to Victoria’s prison system.

Throughout his career, Ron has committed to his own lifelong learning and has used this drive to support many individuals and organisations to identify and achieve their respective visions.
Ron completed a PhD in Management (RMIT), building on his Masters degrees in Educational Management and Leadership, and also in Educational Research. Ron has undergraduate degrees in Arts (Social Sciences), Education (Physical Education), a Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education, and a Diploma in Teaching (Primary).
Ron has also been actively involved in sport, as a participant and as a team manager. Ron managed the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey Team to three world championships (including a Gold medal in 2003) and numerous women’s, men’s and boy’s Ice hockey and In Line hockey teams to National and State championships.
