Annual General Meeting
The AGM will involve presentation of reports on the 2018 VALBEC year and the election of the new Executive committee for 2019 – 2020.

VALBEC Committee nominations
The VALBEC committee is a dynamic and collaborative group who meet once a month to discuss, plan and take action on behalf of members and the ALBE field. Nominations to be forwarded to the returning officer before the meeting.
Presentation: ‘Education and family violence’
Magistrate Therese McCarthy will talk about the positive impact of education for vulnerable people including young people and victims of family violence.
Therese McCarthy was appointed a Victorian Magistrate in February 2017. She is the lead family violence magistrate for the Western Region of Melbourne. Prior to being appointed to the court, Therese was a Victorian barrister who practiced in Public Law, Administrative Law, Equal Opportunity, Discrimination and Human Rights, Family Law and guardianship and administration.
Prior to studying law, Therese worked as a consultant to courts and a range of government agencies, family violence services other community agencies in Australia and overseas on organizational responses to vulnerable people.
Therese has also worked as a Prosecutor, Commonwealth Director, Public Prosecutions; Legal Associate to Justices Brown and Bennett, Family Court of Australia; Consultant to International Criminal Tribunal, Former Yugoslavia (UN); Consultant to Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN, Syria); Consultant to Director, Public Prosecutions, Papua New Guinea; human rights trainer with NGOs in Pakistan, with a particular focus on the rule of law and ending impunity as it relates to violence against women.
Therese has a strong commitment to Human Rights and ending violence against women and children.
