5. Literacy: It’s everybody’s business - ACAL conference report
Adelaide turned on some delightful Spring weather but delegates did not get to enjoy much of it once they were ensconced in the sumptuous Hilton. The program was stimulating and varied and too hard to cover in this space. Papers will be available on the website in due course.
A highlight was the dinner with guest speaker Jeff McMullen talking about indigenous literacy (to be printed in the next edition of Literacy Link).
The Saturday Keynote Address by Margaret Somerville was inspiring and the image of the Scottish moors accompanied by a haunting Celtic song were resonant as she referred to the power of place and oral traditions of story telling in our indigenous communities.
VALBEC executive members Pauline O’Maley (ACAL past president), Yvonne Russell (2006 ACAL Victorian State rep), Lynne Matheson (outgoing ACAL Victorian State rep) attended the ACAL conference in Adelaide, October 6 and 7 and the full executive meeting on Sunday Oct 8.
Karen Manwaring, Fine Print commissioning editor was part sponsored by ACAL and VALBEC to attend.
Debbie Soccio has been elected as the ACAL Secretary. The next edition of Literacy Link will have contact details and further information about ACAL membership and other national activities.
